It seems like every day, you will see somewhere an offer to get you to apply for a credit card. As much as the pollution it is causing, and the madness it instils in our minds, we must look at the silver lining. With all these companies and offers, we can safely say that it is a very competitive market, and thefore we are more likely to get a very good credit card deal.

But which one to choose? It’s hard to know exactly which credit card will be the best for your situation. This article will help you decide which of the credit card offers you should look into, and which you should run away from.

There is no one “right” credit card for everyone, just as there is no one “right” car for everyone, or clothing style, or food. Credit is a very individual commodity, and you have to build your credit based on your individual circumstances.

Do you have balances that you need to pay off? If so, there are hundreds of cards out there that have special offers for credit card balance transfers. These range from no interest for the life of the transferred balance, to just a short time of no- or low-interest on your transferred balance. To get these transfer perks, though, you may need to be willing to not get some other rewards, like airline miles or bonus points. Be careful, though, and make sure they don’t play games with the interest rate or annual fees (or even application fees).

If you don’t have a balance to pay, be sure to look for cards that will offer you bonus perks that you want and can use. Things to look for: a grace period for purchases (the longer the better); low annual fees (or even no annual fee); no usage fee (there are some cards that charge you if you don’t use them!); no expiration of rewards (some do expire, and some don’t); any spending requirements. Some credit cards with big bonuses require that you spend at least a certain amount on the card to receive or maintain your rewards or bonus points.

If you have bad credit, or no credit at all, there are still cards for you to apply for. Look close to home. Try your own bank; if you’ve had accounts with them for a while, they may be more willing to extend credit than a large independent company. Also, don’t ignore the possibility of a secured credit card. These are especially useful for people with a poor credit history, and they help you to build up a good credit history again, given a little time.

In conclusion, there are always credit card offers out there — just be sure to do your homework and find the best one for your situation.
